RPG Developer

Omaha, NE


CSS Staffing has multiple open positions with our direct client for Intermediate and Senior RPG Developers. The client will be supporting all phases of application development and support for enterprise applications across a number of business domains.  The best candidate will have a solid understanding of various RPG programming styles and familiarity with both legacy as well as modern IBM i environments.  For the experienced developer, this will be a rewarding and varied engagement.  If you can work with the old as well as the new and appreciate the chance to help move the underlying systems to a more flexible architecture, this may be just the opportunity for you.


Senior Core Responsibilities:

Senior position will report to Director of Application Development.

  • The IBM System i development team is a highly technical team that develops and maintains client's business applications, 90% or more of which is in-house developed
  • There are multiple System i's in the environment configured to maintain high availability 24/7
  • Business applications include core transportation software, billing, accounting, truck/trailer maintenance, driver recruiting, etc.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong desire to be a key contributor in providing our (internal and external) customers software needs
  • 2-4 year degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years experience in a development environment
  • Experience with SQL for DB2, preferably on an IBM i
  • Experience in RPG
  • Requirements gathering, analysis, design, development, troubleshoot, debug, implementation and production maintenance/support


Desired skills (will train as necessary):

  • Development in an IBM i environment using RPG and/or SQL
  • ILE experience (Modules, Service Programs, Sub-procedures)
  • IBM Websphere MQ
  • Agile/Scrum development methodology
  • Object Oriented (OO) concepts
  • Rational Developer for i (RDi)


Junior RPG Developer:

Support the IBM System i which is AS/400 based core software applications. This is a daytime support programming role that will provide a key role in the implementation, evolvement and support of these applications. 

  • Design, develop and test business applications using RPG with embedded SQ
  • Troubleshoot, debug and support business applications as well as interpret business needs
  • Work with the business in order to developer system requirements



  • A 2 or 4 year degree in Computer Science (CS), Management Information Systems (MIS) or equivalent (such as training and coursework in core technologies) desired
  • Experience with RPG III, RPG IV/ILE, RPG Free techniques (embedded SQL, modules, service programs and sub procedures)
  • Familiarity with IBM Websphere MQ, Agile/Scrum development methodology, Object Oriented (OO) concepts and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) desired

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Assignment length: Both Contract and/or Direct hire - candidates must be eligible to work in the US on a W2 basis without sponsorship or visa transfer for direct hire
